KOTA BARU: The National Kenaf and Tobacco Board (LKTN) has inked several memoranda of understanding (MoU) on collaborations with private companies to help the board in the planting, processing and marketing of kenaf products.

LKTN chairman Ab Aziz Ab Kadir said the move is also aimed at tackling the issue on the sale of smuggled cigarettes in the country.

He said with the MoU, LKTN also hoped to increase kenaf planting by up to 10,000ha next year.

These collaborations are important as they as they can help strengthen demand for kenaf in the market.

"Among the companies which we have inked MoU with include Dallis Enterprise, Eadeco Non-Woven Sdn Bhd and KMDI Holding Sdn Bhd.

"These companies are involved in various areas ranging from housing construction to the mattress business as well as non-woven products," he said.

He was speaking to reporters at LKTN's Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house in Lundang here today.

Also present was LKTN director-general Idris Mohd Salleh.

LKTN has about 1,200 kenaf planters nationwide.

Meanwhile, Ab Aziz said LKTN also plans to open a new office in Gopeng, Perak next month.

"The opening of the new office, which will take place on June 1, is part of our branch expansion throughout the country, " he said.
